  • Public Event

Join the Kavli Nanoscience Institute for its inaugural KNI Microscopy Seminar, a new series that brings which brings internationally recognized microscopists to the KNI and Caltech.

The first seminar will be given by Dr. Nabil Bassim (Scientific Director of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, Canada's National Microscopy Facility; professor of Materials Science and Engineering, McMaster University, Canada). Light refreshments will be available before the seminar.

"From mm3 to atoms – Correlative Microscopy Workflows to Solve Materials and Biological Problems"

Abstract

Used together, the electron and ion-based microscopy are the Swiss-army knife of materials characterization. Resolving the structure of materials at multiple length scales enabled prediction of materials properties and processing. In this talk, I will introduce the concept of correlative microscopy with 3 examples – the development of digital twins for predicting materials reliability for decades, the use of correlative microscopy to identify an infection event of a coronavirus, and the use of secondary electron contrast to determine the structure of van der Waals heterostructures. All of these rely on focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy at their key enabling technology.

Bio

Dr. Nabil Bassim is professor of Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University, Canada. Prior to his arrival at McMaster in 2016, he was a Materials Research Engineer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, where he arrived as a postdoc in 2003. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida and graduated magna cum laude (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of South Florida in 1997. Dr. Bassim's research focuses on advanced ion and electron microscopy techniques for a wide variety of applications. Since 2019, he has served as the Scientific Director of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, Canada's National Microscopy Facility.

NOTE: This is an in-person event. All attendees are required to follow campus Covid-safety guidelines.
